Häxan (Swedish: [ˈhɛ̂ksan], “The Witch”; Danish: Heksen; English: The Witches; released in the United States in 1968 as Witchcraft Through the Ages) is a silent horror essay film written and directed by Benjamin Christensen, released in 1922. The video covers the historical foundations and beliefs surrounding witchcraft from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, using both documentary-style narrations and staged narrative scenes. Based in part on Christensen’s own research into the Malleus Maleficarum, a 15th-century German handbook for inquisitors, Häxan hypothesizes that such witch hunts may have resulted from misconceptions of mental or neurological diseases, resulting in widespread panic.
