Hellraiser is a 1987 British supernatural horror film written, directed, and produced by Clive Barker, based on Barker’s 1986 book The Hellbound Heart. Barker made his directing debut with the picture. The narrative revolves around a mysterious puzzle box that summons the Cenobites, a group of extra-dimensional, sadomasochistic entities that are unable to distinguish between pain and pleasure. Doug Bradley plays the Cenobites’ leader, who is referred to as “Pinhead” in the sequels.

The film Hellraiser was shot in late 1986. The film’s soundtrack was initially intended to be performed by the electronic music group Coil, but due to producer demand, the film was re-scored by Christopher Young. Young modified several of Coil’s motifs into the final music. On September 10, 1987, Hellraiser had its first public screening at the Prince Charles Cinema. The picture made $14.6 million dollars.
