Henry Portrait Of A Serial Killer
Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer is a 1986 American psychological horror crime film directed and co-written by John McNaughton about the apparently unstoppable murder spree of a serial killer. It stars Michael Rooker in his feature film debut as the nomadic murderer Henry, Tom Towles as Henry’s jail mate Otis, and Tracy Arnold as Otis’s sister Becky. Henry and Otis are largely based on convicted real-life serial murderers Henry Lee Lucas and Ottis Toole.
Henry was shot in 1985, but it had trouble finding a distributor. It had its world debut at the Chicago International Film Festival in 1986 and was shown at many additional festivals during the late 1980s. Following successful screenings that drew both controversy and favorable critical notice, the MPAA rated the picture “X,” cementing its reputation for controversy. It was later taken up for limited distribution in an unrated version in 1990. It was filmed on 16mm in less than a month on a $110,000 budget.
