What about Hopper’s story?
His parents are unknown. His granddad died in a nearby cabin; it’s now a storage unit. Jim hated Ms. Ratliff’s middle school science. Jim attended Hawkins High School with Joyce Byers and Bob “The Brain” Newby. Joyce and Hopper became close, skipping class to smoke smokes. Mr. Cooper exclaimed, “Hey, bastards!” Jim lied to his mother about being on the debate team while having sex in his father’s Oldsmobile. His ninth-grade crush was Alice Gilbert (about 1956-1957). After high school in 1960, Jim served in Vietnam. Jim befriended Benny Hammond and Murray Bauman (either through high school, serving in the war, or some other yet to be explained circumstance).
Diane Hopper
They had Sara in 1971. After married in 1972, Jim joined the NYPD. Sara and Jim read at the park. Sara developed cancer in 1977-1978. Despite advanced therapies, Sara died young.
After Diane’s death, Jim and Diane divorced. Jim took Sara’s hairband as a memento and returned to Hawkins in 1979 as Police Chief, a carefree position due to the town’s low crime record. Hopper drank, used drugs, and slept with younger women.
