Yoshihiro Togashi drew and wrote Hunter Hunter. Since March 1998, it has been serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shnen Jump, however there have been regular hiatuses since 2006. In October 2018, 36 tankbon volumes gathered their chapters. Gon Freecss finds that his father, who abandoned him as a child, is a world-renowned Hunter who specializes in fantasy activities such as identifying rare or unexplained animal species, treasure hunting, scouting unknown enclaves, or tracking down lawless persons. Gon becomes a Hunter and discovers his father. Gon meets other Hunters and the otherworldly.
Hunter Hunter was made into a 62-episode anime series by Nippon Animation and Kazuhiro Furuhashi that aired on Fuji Television from October 1999 to March 2001.
Hunter Hunter has sold over 79 million copies as of November 2021, making it one of Shueisha’s best-selling manga series.
Gon Freecss has always been told his parents are dead. Gon departs Whale Island to take the Hunter Examination after learning through Kite, his father’s apprentice, that he is still alive and has become an experienced Hunter. During the exam, Gon meets and befriends three other applicants: Kurapika, the last remaining member of the Kurta clan who wants to become a Hunter to avenge his clan and recover their scarlet-glowing eyes; Leorio, a prospective physician who wants the financial benefits that Hunters receive; and Killua Zoldyck, a twelve-year-old girl. Gon meets Hisoka, a strange and dangerous transmuter, among other examinees. Gon and his companions pass the test after many tries together, save Killua, who fails after murdering another candidate owing to his brother, Illumi, and flees away in disgrace.
Leorio and Kurapika leave after Gon and the others persuade Killua to rejoin their side. Gon and Killua then go to the Heavens Arena, a skyscraper where hundreds of martial artists participate in fighting contests to develop and earn money.
There, they meet Zushi, a Heavens Arena candidate whose kung fu instructor, Wing, teaches them to utilize Nen, a Qi-like life force used to display parapsychological talents and the last prerequisite to pass the Hunter Exam. Gon and his allies subsequently fight the Phantom Troupe in Yorknew City. Kurapika kills two of the thieves and gives up chasing the others to save Gon and Killua, but not before sealing Chrollo Lucilfer’s abilities.
