Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Dissent
When NYU Law student Shana Knizhnik elevated Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg to celebrity status in 2013, she became known as Notorious RBG, or RBG. Knizhnik created a Tumblr page for the justice in 2013, inspired by Justice Ginsburg’s dissent in the Shelby County v. Holder case. The Tumblr account took off, and Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg became a pop culture celebrity. Justice Ginsburg became well-known for her vehement dissents in reaction to several Supreme Court decisions.
What exactly is dissent? When the Supreme Court rules on a matter, it issues a majority opinion. The majority opinion explains why the majority of justices resolved the case the way they did. However, in many cases, not all of the justices think that the judgment was proper. In this case, one or more justices will submit a dissent with the majority opinion. The justices who disagree with the verdict explain why in their dissent.
Remind everyone that you don’t care what they say. Stand up for what is right even when everyone else is wrong. This coir doormat has an encouraging remark from Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who dissented from the majority judgment in a case – learn more about it here.
