What Happened To Every Demon?

When Kagome first entered the well, she found herself in a world considerably different from the one she had just left. The region was filled with magic and monsters, and it served as the background for the series. During her tenure in Feudal Japan, she even joined up with a half-demon and fought many.

With so many demons roaming about, it seems unusual that there aren’t any in modern-day Japan. So, what became of them? On the surface, it seems Takahashi intended to divide the time periods into two distinct universes, which makes sense for narrative reasons but not much logical sense. They did not exterminate all demons in the past, thus there should be some demons in the twenty-first century.
