John Wayne’s “Duke” Nickname
Why was John Wayne dubbed “Duke”? Wayne made his acting debut in 1926’s Brown Of Harvard before starring in b-movie Westerns like 1932’s Haunted Gold. Stagecoach helped him become one of the greatest Western cinema stars of all time.
Marion Robert Morrison’s first film credit was as “Duke Morrison” in 1929’s Words and Music. “Duke” became his moniker and the name of a white horse he rode in six ’30s Westerns. Few understood where Wayne’s moniker Duke originated from. Wayne, who only produced one sequel, heard that he was descended from royalty. Duke was his Airedale Terrier dog’s childhood moniker. Wayne walked his enormous dog to school every day. A neighborhood firefighter nicknamed the Terrier “Big Duke,” and Marion became “Little Duke.”
