What is it about Jujutsu Kaisen that makes it so popular?
To keep readers interested, author Gege Akutami said that while developing characters, writers must adhere to the canons of shnen manga culture. According to the author, Yuji’s elder brother, Akutami, is the complete opposite of Akutami, since he has excelled in both athletics and academics. It’s Akutami’s opinion that the lesson of Jujutsu Kaisen is that no one is right or wrong, and that each character behaves in accordance with their own set of moral principles. Akutami was inspired by YuYu Hakusho’s Sensui arc to create villains bent on wiping mankind, but for whom readers might yet feel sympathy.
Sukuna and Mahito, Akutami wanted to avoid the typical “deep down they are good” idea, stating that they are intrinsically evil beings who like to make humans suffer, but Akutami said that it cannot be proved that they are wrong, adding that Mahito was like Thanos in Avengers: Endgame, as Akutami never felt hatred for him.
Characters like Panda and Toge Inumaki were initially drawn by Akutami while Satoru Gojo was conceived as a metaphor for the euphoria of force. As a result of his design, Sukuna was Akutami’s first favorite character, while Kento Nanami, who was the first character Akutami properly designed and developed, was Akutami’s second favorite character.
