The Lion King is a 2019 Disney musical drama film directed by Jon Favreau and written by Jeff Nathanson. This is a computer-animated recreation of Disney’s 1994 film of the same name. The film stars Donald Glover, Seth Rogen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Alfre Woodard, Billy Eichner, John Kani, John Oliver, Florence Kasumba, Eric André, Keegan-Michael Key, JD McCrary, Shahadi Wright Joseph, and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. James Earl Jones reprises his role from the first film. The narrative follows Simba, a young lion who must become king when his uncle Scar kills his father, Mufasa.

Plans for a remake of 1994’s The Lion King were announced in September 2016 after the success of Disney remakes like The Jungle Book (2016), directed by Jon Favreau. Favreau was inspired by the Broadway adaptation and the original film’s plot. Much of the key cast signed in early 2017, and principal filming started in mid-2017. “Virtual-reality technologies” employed in The Jungle Book were utilized more in The Lion King. Hans Zimmer, Elton John, and Tim Rice, who collaborated on the original music, returned to write the score with Knowles-Carter, who aided John in rewriting the soundtrack and produced a new song, “Spirit,” which she also sang.
