A Look Back at the Pumpkin’s Past
The pumpkin, which is a kind of squash, was initially discovered in the Americas, more specifically in the region that is now known as Mexico and Central America. Pumpkin seeds were spread over North America by Native Americans who had traveled to other regions. They carved large strips out of the pumpkins, then roasted them over an open fire. In addition to this, they woven carpets out of dried strips of pumpkin. Pumpkin seeds were consumed by Native Americans, and they were also employed in traditional medicine. Although Columbus brought pumpkin seeds back to Europe, the continent was not conducive to the plant’s growth. Pumpkins were first discovered in what is now a portion of Canada in 1584 by the French adventurer Jacques Cartier. He referred to them using the Greek phrase “pepon,” which literally translates to “big melons.” The term was eventually altered to “pumpkin” throughout the course of time. Once the colonists landed in what is now the United States, they started utilizing pumpkins as a source of food. However, the use of pumpkins into Halloween traditions may be traced back to the Irish immigrants who first did so.
