Is the middle finger disrespectful?
“The finger” or the middle finger (as in throwing someone the (middle) finger, the bird, or flipping someone off) is an obscene hand gesture in Western culture. The gesture conveys moderate to high disrespect and approximately translates to “fuck me,” “fuck you,” “shove it up to your ass/arse,” “up yours,” or “go fuck yourself.” It is done by presenting the back of a hand with simply the middle finger extended upwards, however, the thumb is extended in certain places. Several cultures, particularly in the Western world, see extending the finger as a sign of disrespect. Many cultures employ identical gestures to show contempt, while others use them to communicate by pointing without intending to offend. The gesture is often used to show disgust, although it may also be used to express comedy or playfulness.
The gesture originated in ancient Greece and was later adopted by ancient Rome. It was formerly associated with the phallus. It became popular as a symbol of disdain in the early 1800s and was employed by musicians (notably more common among actors, celebrities, athletes, and politicians; most still view the gesture as obscene). In more recent times, the index and ring fingers, in addition to the middle finger, have been compared to the testes.
