Why is Monsters University an absolute must-see?
Monsters University is a 2013 Disney computer-animated monster comedy film. Dan Scanlon (in his feature directorial debut) directed; Kori Rae produced; John Lasseter, Pete Docter, Andrew Stanton, and Lee Unkrich executive produced. Scanlon and Dan Gerson created the script and narrative. Randy Newman created and led the film’s soundtrack, his sixth for Pixar. It’s the only Pixar prequel. Monsters University chronicles the tale of James P. Sullivan and Mike Wazowski, the primary protagonists of Monsters, Inc. In order to make his goal come true, they must work together with Oozma Kappa members. John Goodman, Billy Crystal, Steve Buscemi, Bob Peterson, and John Ratzenberger reprise their roles as James P. Sullivan, Mike Wazowski, Randall Boggs, Roz, and the Abominable Snowman. Helen Mirren, Alfred Molina, Peter Sohn, Joel Murray, Sean Hayes, Dave Foley, Charlie Day, and Nathan Fillion join the new cast. Bonnie Hunt portrays Mike’s elementary school teacher Ms. Karen Graves.
Disney planned a Monsters, Inc. sequel in 2005. Disney’s Circle 7 Animation made the short after conflicts with Pixar. Circle 7’s version of the film was cancelled after Disney’s 2006 purchase of Pixar. A Pixar sequel was revealed in 2010, however it would be a prequel called Monsters University.
Monsters University debuted in London on June 5 and opened in the U.S. on June 21. Saschka Unseld’s The Blue Umbrella accompanied it in cinemas. The film made $743 million worldwide on a $200 million budget, making it 2013’s eighth highest-grossing picture. Party Central, an animated short film set after Monsters University, debuted in autumn 2013 and was released in 2014 alongside Muppets Most Wanted.
