Why did Prince decide to leave the Revolution?
Prince refused to meet his band again, and The Revolution was dissatisfied with Prince’s choice to add new band members. Wendy Melvoin recalls Prince practicing with all of his new picks and disregarding The Revolution by not looking at them in a 2017 direct-to-YouTube interview (on Yahoo’s account). Brownmark, Wendy, and Lisa all threatened to leave the company. Prince sent Bobby Z. to the airport at one time and practically nabbed Melvoin and Coleman before they boarded.
All three were eventually persuaded to wait it out. Prince offered Brownmark a large quantity of money, but Brownmark settled for $3000 per week, a pittance in comparison to other touring bands. He rejected a considerably more lucrative offer to be the bassist for Stevie Nicks, who was on tour at the time. According to Brown, Prince never followed through on “all that money.” However, on the last night of the tour in Yokohama, Japan, Prince shattered all of his guitars following a final encore of “Purple Rain.” Wendy turned to face the other members and murmured (and they all agreed), “It’s over!”
