On July 4, 1776, what happened?
The final language of the Declaration of Independence was accepted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. After the draft was submitted on July 2nd, they worked on it for a few days before coming to an agreement on all of the adjustments and changes.
The date of July 4, 1776, was included into the Declaration of Independence, and the elaborate handwritten version signed in August of that year bears witness to that fact (the copy now displayed at the National Archives in Washington, D.C.) Also, it’s the date that appears on the first editions of the Declaration, known as the “Dunlap Broadsides,” which were printed and distributed across the new country. As a result, the date July 4, 1776, was often associated with the adoption of the Declaration of Independence.
It is the day the Constitution was signed rather than the date it was passed that we commemorate each year on September 17th, which is why we call it Constitution Day. When the Declaration of Independence was written on August 2, 1776, if we’d maintained the same strategy, we’d be celebrating Independence Day on that day every year!
