PEE-WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE: A Boy, A Bike

Pee-Big wee’s Adventure is a tale about obsession. The type of all-consuming enthusiasm that may drive even the most misunderstood eccentric to uproot his life in pursuit of his ambition. The object of that yearning in this film is, of course, an impeccably restored cherry-red 1947 Schwinn racing bike. Paul Reubens himself is the oddball.

From the start of Pee-Big wee’s Adventure, it’s evident that, although Pee-wee is a unique, mainly solitary character, he is not lonely. Every morning, he awakens to a complicated system of Rube Goldberg machines preparing a feast of fresh-squeezed juice, pancakes, eggs, and bacon organized into a smiling face. Herman addresses the food as “Mr. Breakfast” and strikes up a conversation with it. Of course, he plays both sides of the discussion.

Pee-creative wee’s imagination may fulfill his craving for companionship, but he is extremely lonely. His beloved Schwinn is unquestionably his closest buddy, and he basically uses it as a substitute for actual human connections, enabling him to put everyone else far. Dottie, Pee-bike wee’s mechanic, clearly has a hopeless crush on him, and when she summons the nerve to ask Herman on a date to the drive-in movie theater, he dismisses her “You don’t wanna get mixed up with a guy like me”. Pee-wee says solemnly, “I’m a loner, Dottie. A rebel.”
