Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure

Tim Burton’s debut feature-film excursion is a fun one, with all of the director’s characteristics on display, from the eccentric design to the animated scenes and brilliant pastiche music by Danny Elfman that runs from Nino Rota to Bernard Hermann.

Pee-(Paul Wee’s Reubens) gizmo-filled home is genuine, and although it has a white picket fence, it isn’t painted pillar-box red, and the yard isn’t teeming with vividly colored figurines. It’s 1846 Oxley Street in South Pasadena, a lovely sidestreet (and be aware that this is a private home).

The Third Street Promenade, Third Street at Broadway in Santa Monica, is the retail area where Pee-Wee shops for magic and has his bicycle stolen. What’s more, guess what? The pedestrianized mall is now peppered with shrubs carefully cut into dinosaur forms, a la Tim Burton.

Tim Burton directed the 1985 comedy picture Pee Wee’s Big Adventure. Pee-wee Herman travels out on his bike in this short to retrieve his stolen bicycle, which carries a vital part of his ancestry.
