What is Pocahontas Disney?
Pocahontas is a 1995 American animated musical historical drama film about Pocahontas, a Powhatan lady, and the arrival of English colonial immigrants from the Virginia Company. Pocahontas’ meeting with John Smith and her fabled saving of his life is romanticized in the film. Walt Disney Feature Animation created the picture, which was distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. It is the 33rd Disney animated feature picture, and the sixth made and released during the Disney Renaissance era. Mike Gabriel and Eric Goldberg directed the movie (his feature directorial debut). Irene Bedard and Mel Gibson play Pocahontas and Smith, respectively, in the voice cast, which also includes David Ogden Stiers, Russell Means, Christian Bale, Billy Connolly, and Linda Hunt. Alan Menken composed the soundtrack and co-wrote the film’s songs with Stephen Schwartz.
Gabriel created the picture during the Thanksgiving holiday after making his directorial debut with The Rescuers Down Under (1990). The film was under development at the same time as The Lion King (1994), and it drew in the majority of Disney’s finest animators. Meanwhile, Disney studio chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg felt that the picture should be a serious love epic in the manner of 1991’s Beauty and the Beast, with the hopes of being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, much like Beauty. In order to make the picture appealing to viewers, screenwriters Carl Binder, Susannah Grant, and Philip LaZebnik made liberties with history.
Pocahontas was released on June 16, 1995, to mixed reviews from critics, who commended the animation, voice talents, and music while criticizing the plot for its lack of tone. The historical mistakes and racist connotations in the film drew mixed reactions. Pocahontas grossed more than $346 million in theaters. Menken won two Academy Awards for the film: Best Musical or Comedy Score and Best Original Song for “Colors of the Wind.” Pocahontas’ portrayal as a strong heroine, according to reviewers, impacted following Disney films such as Mulan (1998) and Frozen (2013).
