Queen Music Band
Queen is a 1970s London rock band. Queen was Freddie Mercury (vocals, keyboard), Brian May (guitar, vocals), Roger Taylor (drums, vocals), and John Deacon (bass). The band’s early works were inspired by progressive rock, hard rock, and heavy metal, but they later included arena rock and pop-rock. Before Queen, May and Taylor formed Smile. Mercury inspired Smile to try new staging and recording approaches. In 1970, he offered the name Queen. Deacon joined in 1971 before the band’s 1973 first album. 1974’s Queen II was the band’s first UK hit. In 1974, Sheer Heart Attack and 1975’s A Night at the Opera won them worldwide fame. This album includes “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which topped the UK charts for nine weeks and popularized the music video style.
News of the World’s 1977 album included the songs “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions.” Queen was a top stadium rock band by the 1980s. “Another One Bites the Dust” from The Game (1980) is their best-selling single, while Greatest Hits is the best-selling album in the UK and the US. Publications put their 1985 Live Aid performance among the best in music history. In August 1986, Mercury performed with Queen in Knebworth, England. He died in 1991 of AIDS-related bronchopneumonia. Deacon retired in 1997. Since 2004, May and Taylor have toured as “Queen+” with Paul Rodgers and Adam Lambert.
Queen has been a worldwide pop culture presence for almost 40 years. Their 170 million to 300 million record sales make them one of the world’s best-selling musicians. In 1990, Queen won the Brit Award for Outstanding Contribution to British Music. In 2001, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, and in 2003, they were inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2005, they won the Ivor Novello Award for Outstanding Song Collection, and in 2018 they won the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
