Ralph Ralphie Parker
Ralph “Ralphie” Parker is the protagonist of Jean Shepherd’s book In God We Trust, All Others Pay Cash, and as such, the primary character of many cinematic versions of the novel, including A Christmas Story and its sequel.
He is a self-centered, selfish, yet innocent child who wants a rifle BB gun for Christmas, despite the fact that everyone warns him, “You’ll shoot your eye out!” The original novel is recounted from the point of view of grown-up Ralphie, who works as a writer in New York.
The plot follows him as he goes to his old hometown of Hohman, Indiana, to write a magazine article on it and reflects on his boyhood memories of growing up there during the Great Depression. While the adult Ralphie’s narrative (spoken by Jean Shepherd himself) is retained, the film concentrates exclusively on his antics as a nine-year-old child, while the sequel, set five years later, explores his life as a 14-year-old adolescent. He gets more well-meaning and pleasant as he grows older, yet he still has his infantile daydreams as a 9-year-old kid.
