Slam Dunk (stylized as SLAM DUNK) is a Japanese sports manga series written and drawn by him. It is the tale of a basketball team from Shōhoku High School in Japan’s Shōnan region. From October 1990 to June 1996, it was published in Shueisha’s shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump, with the chapters compiled into 31 tankōbon volumes.
Toei Animation adapted the manga into an anime television series, which ran from October 1993 to March 1996 and was broadcast internationally, mainly in Japan, numerous other Asian countries, and Europe.
Slam Dunk has sold 170 million copies, making it the fifth best-selling manga series of all time. It won the 40th Shogakukan Manga Award in the shōnen category in 1994. Inoue earned special recognition from the Japan Basketball Association in 2010 for his contributions to the popularization of basketball in Japan.
