Where did the tradition of snowmen come from?
Early snowman documentation dates back to the Middle Ages, but we must presume that people, being the creative creatures that they are, have taken use of the frozen elements that fall from the sky ever since winter and humanity coexisted. Bob Eckstein, author of The History of the Snowman, discovered the snowman’s oldest known image in an illuminated copy of the Book of Hours from 1380 in the Koninkijke Bibliothee in The Hague, Netherlands.
The depressed snowman seems to be anti-Semitic, having been fashioned using the stacked-ball technique and wearing a jovial Jewish hat. The adjacent inscription proclaims Jesus Christ’s crucifixion as he sits slumped with his back to the fatal fire. Apparently, plague-ridden Europeans needed a funny stooge upon whom they could heap their blame and fury, and the Jewish snowman met the bill.
