The Production of Spookies

Spookies began as a feature picture called Twisted Souls, written and produced by Frank Farel, Brendan Faulkner, and Thomas Doran, and directed by Faulkner and Doran. The film’s principal shooting started in the late summer of 1984 at the Jay Estate in Rye, New York, and ended in October of the same year. Twisted Souls was being edited when creative and legal concerns between the producers and the financial backer prohibited final post-production work (final editing, score, post-effects, etc.) from being completed.

The original Twisted Souls video, directed by Faulkner and Doran, includes all of the visitors who arrive in two automobiles, as well as all of the creatures and effects they experience within the mansion. The creatures include the demon Ouija girl, the muck men, the spider lady, the snake demons, the hallway demon, the Grim Reaper, and the first group of zombies we saw outdoors early in the film.
