Thé Story of Starcourt Mall.
Hawkins, Indiana’s Starcourt Mall. Starcourt Industries’ subsidiary. Larry Kline opened the mall in 1985.
Starcourt Mall is a major site in Season 3, built after the collapse of 1984 and thriving by 1985. The mall produced employment and encouraged the economy, according to the mayor. Steve Harrington and Robin Buckley worked at Scoops Ahoy. The Party used Steve’s work to sneak into movies via mall service tunnels.
This led to small local “mom and pop” establishments, like Melvald’s General Store, suffering financially. Townspeople protested and tried to urge others to boycott the mall.
Dustin Henderson approaches Steve when his Cerebro picks up a Russian code. Robin helps them unravel a sequence of apparently illogical sentences. Steve identifies the recording’s background music as a coin-operated horse machine, suggesting that despite the coding was Russian, the transmission was in the mall.
Upon receiving a shipment, a phrase of the code sticks out to Robin, relating to LYNX Transportation, leading her to unravel the time and location of an important shipment at the mall. Along with Erica, the four accidently trigger an elevator that takes them miles below the mall, where they discover the Starcourt Mall was a front for a secret Russian base that hosted the first Key, a high powered energy machine that attempted to re-open a gate to the past.
