Stitch had a very different role in the initial draft of the script for Lilo & Stitch. Stitch was supposed to be an interstellar mobster who flees to Earth, and Jumba was supposed to be a dissatisfied member of Stitch’s team who hunts him after being left behind following a botched theft! If this had been the case, the movie would have been drastically different.

As a hardened mobster, the authors believed Stitch was not a sympathetic figure. So they made him younger and turned him into an experiment rather than a criminal. They also transformed Jumba from a frustrated gang member into the scientist who produced Stitch. Because of these adjustments, I believe the film is a lot better.
