The History of Hawkins
Prior to 1983, Hawkins was a mostly unremarkable community. Prior to 1983, the last person reported missing was in the summer of 1923, and the last suicide was in the autumn of 1961. The most intriguing feature was the covert Hawkins National Laboratory, one of six national labs born of World War II scientific initiatives. The town’s citizens were unaware that the facility was helping to the controversial government program known as MKUltra.
During laboratory research in November 1983, a doorway to an alternative realm was accidentally opened, enabling a predatory monster to invade Hawkins. The creature kidnapped the inhabitants and transported them to Upside Down. Will Byers, who was returned home after a week, and Barbara Holland, who was slain in the Upside Down, were two of its victims. Hawkins Lab agents kept the circumstances of their abduction hidden.
The Hawkins Lab was formally closed down in 1984 as a consequence of Nancy Wheeler and Jonathan Byers recording and submitting a confession from Sam Owens to Murray Bauman. Barbara Holland’s death was supposed to have been caused by a chemical leak from the lab in order to keep the truth about the Upside Down hidden since Bauman felt that the whole public would not accept it and that the proof could simply be deleted. Eleven closed the doorway to the Upside Down, freeing Will from his ownership of the Upside Down’s ultimate ruler, the Mind Flayer.
