The Changeling is a 1980 Canadian supernatural psychological horror film directed by Peter Medak and starring George C. Scott, Trish Van Devere, and Melvyn Douglas. Its narrative involves an acclaimed New York City composer who relocates to Seattle, Washington and settles into a haunted house. The script is based on incidents that writer Russell Hunter said he saw while residing in the Henry Treat Rogers estate in Denver’s Cheesman Park area in the late 1960s; Hunter also worked as a co-writer on the film.
On March 26, 1980, the picture debuted at the USA Film Festival in Dallas, Texas, and was distributed two days later in Canada and the United States. It earned favorable critical reviews and was the first Canadian-produced picture to achieve worldwide popularity. The film received eight first Genie Awards, including Best Motion Picture, and was nominated for two Saturn Awards.
