The Damned are an English rock band established in 1976 in London by lead singer Dave Vanian, guitarist Brian James, bassist (and subsequently guitarist) Captain Sensible, and drummer Rat Scabies, who went on to become the band’s name. They were the first British punk rock band to issue a single, “New Rose,” in 1976, an album, Damned Damned Damned (1977), and tour the United States. They have nine singles that have reached the Top 40 of the UK Singles Chart.

After Music for Pleasure (1977), their follow-up to their first album was critically panned, and the band momentarily disbanded. They regrouped immediately sans Brian James and produced Machine Gun Etiquette (1979). They produced four studio albums in the 1980s, The Black Album (1980), Strawberries (1982), Phantasmagoria (1985), and Anything (1986), which saw the band go towards a gothic rock sound. Captain Sensible, who had departed the band in 1984, did not appear on the last two albums. James and Sensible reformed in 1988 for a series of reunion shows, one of which was published the following year as the live CD Final Damnation. Their fast-paced punk music has been credited for inspiring and driving the birth of hardcore punk in the United Kingdom and the United States in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
