The Green Mile Stephen King Movie
Frank Darabont’s 1999 American fantasy drama film The Green Mile is based on Stephen King’s 1996 book of the same name. It stars Tom Hanks as a death row prison guard during the Great Depression who encounters mysterious occurrences when an intriguing criminal (Michael Clarke Duncan) arrives at his jail. In supporting roles, David Morse, Bonnie Hunt, Doug Hutchison, and James Cromwell appear.
The picture opened to good reviews in the United States on December 10, 1999, with reviewers praising Darabont’s directing and screenplay, emotional weight, and performances (especially for Hanks and Duncan), however, its length was criticized. It was a financial triumph, generating $286 million on a budget of $60 million, and was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Supporting Actor for Duncan, Best Sound, and Best Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published.
