What exactly is The Howling about?

Joe Dante directed The Howling, a 1981 American horror film starring Dee Wallace, Patrick Macnee, Dennis Dugan, and Robert Picardo. The film is based on Gary Brandner’s book of the same name, and it follows a television newswoman who is dispatched to a secluded mountain resort following a near-fatal encounter with a serial murderer, unknowing that the resort’s population are werewolves.

The picture was released on March 13, 1981, and was a modest box office success, earning $17.9 million. It garnered generally good reviews, with Rob Bottin’s makeup special effects receiving a particular mention. While still in production, the picture received the 1980 Saturn Award for Best Horror Film, and it was one of three high-profile werewolf-themed horror films released in 1981, alongside An American Werewolf in London and Wolfen. Its commercial success boosted Dante’s career, and Warner Bros. hired Dante (as director) and Michael Finnell (as producer) for Gremlins. The popularity of the film spawned a series of seven sequels. A Netflix version was in the works, with Andy Muschietti scheduled to the helm.
