In S. E. Hinton’s book The Outsiders, Johnny advises Ponyboy to “stay gold,” which means to stay out of trouble and pursue his ambition. The phrase “stay gold” refers to a poem by Robert Frost called “Nothing Gold Can Stay,” which Johnny read to Ponyboy earlier in the book.
