The Road Runner Show Cartoon Movie
The Bugs Bunny/Road Runner Movie is a 1979 American animated comedy package film directed by Chuck Jones that combines vintage Looney Tunes/Merrie Melodies cartoons with freshly animated bridge sections hosted by Bugs Bunny. The 1978 bridging scenes see Bugs in his home, which is cantilevered over a carrot-juice waterfall (modeled after Frank Lloyd Wright’s “Fallingwater” house in Bear Run, Pennsylvania). The film was released to commemorate Bugs Bunny’s 40th birthday.
Early on, Bugs talks about the outrageous villains he co-starred with in his cartoons, which is followed by a tongue-in-cheek montage showing the history of humor and a scenario in which Bugs talks about his “many dads.” The second sequence was scripted by Chuck Jones to dispute fellow animation director Bob Clampett’s assertions that he alone produced Bugs during the 1970s, and Clampett’s name is noticeably absent from Bugs’ list as a result of the rivalry between Jones and Clampett. Bugs Bunny: Superstar, starring Bob Clampett, is another collection of cartoon shorts, maybe the first to analyze the history of Warner cartoons, which underplayed Bugs’ other several dads and is part of the aforementioned controversy.
