The Shawshank Redemption Stephen King Movie
Frank Darabont wrote and directed The Shawshank Redemption, based on the 1982 Stephen King book. It follows the tale of banker Andy Dufresne (Tim Robbins), who is condemned to life in Shawshank State Penitentiary despite his innocence. Over the next 20 years, he meets contraband smuggler Ellis “Red” Redding (Morgan Freeman) and helps the prison warden launder money (Bob Gunton). Supporting actors include William Sadler, Clancy Brown, Gil Bellows, and James Whitmore.
Darabont bought the film rights to King’s novella in 1987, but production didn’t begin for five years. He developed the screenplay in eight weeks. The Shawshank Redemption began pre-production in January 1993, two weeks after Darabont submitted his screenplay to Castle Rock Entertainment. The film is set in Maine, although a major shooting took place in Mansfield, Ohio, using the Ohio State Reformatory portraying the prison. Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, and Kevin Costner were cast as Andy. Film score by Thomas Newman.
