The Shining Stephen King Halloween Horror Movie
Stanley Kubrick produced and directed The Shining, a 1980 psychological horror film co-written with author Diane Johnson. The film stars Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Scatman Crothers, and Danny Lloyd and is based on Stephen King’s 1977 book of the same name.
The principal character of the picture is Jack Torrance (Nicholson), an aspiring writer and recovering alcoholic who takes a job as the off-season caretaker of the remote historic Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies with his wife, Wendy Torrance (Duvall), and their small son, Danny Torrance (Lloyd). Danny has psychic powers known as “shining.” After a winter blizzard traps the Torrances in their home, Jack’s sanity deteriorates owing to the otherworldly entities that inhabit the hotel.
The film was nearly entirely shot at EMI Elstree Studios, with sets based on actual locales. Kubrick often worked with a small team, which enabled him to execute several takes, sometimes to the detriment of the actors and crew. Several sequences were shot using the new Steadicam mount, giving the picture an original and immersive appearance and feel. Because of inconsistencies, ambiguities, symbolism, and deviations from the novel, there has been significant debate regarding the meanings and events in the film.
