Bart JoJo Simpson is a fictional character and member of the Simpson family in the American animated television series The Simpsons. Nancy Cartwright voices him, and he first appeared on television in The Tracey Ullman Show short “Good Night” on April 19, 1987. While sitting in the foyer of James L. Brooks’ office, cartoonist Matt Groening developed and drew Bart. Groening was approached to pitch a series of short films based on his comic strip, Life in Hell, but instead chose to develop a new cast of characters. While the other characters were named after members of Groening’s family, Bart’s name is an anagram of the term brat. After two years on The Tracey Ullman Show, the Simpsons got their own show on Fox, which premiered on December 17, 1989. Except for “Four Great Women and a Manicure,” Bart has been featured in every Simpsons episode.
