Winnie the Pooh was based on a real-life bear. For his first birthday, writer A.A. Milne gifted his son a plush teddy bear purchased from London’s Harrods Department Store. The bear’s name was changed to Winnie after Milne took his son Christopher Robin Milne to London Zoo.

Winnie, a famous black bear who lived at London Zoo at the time, was the idea for Christopher Robin’s teddy bear’s name change. The bear was named Winnie because it was presented by a Canadian soldier recruited for service in Europe during World War I. Christopher Robin would pay frequent visits to the bear and be occasionally permitted to feed it.
