Was the turkey always on the Thanksgiving menu?
It’s one thing historians can’t seem to agree on, despite the fact that there’s plenty of evidence that turkeys have been a popular dinnertime menu item for centuries. When it comes to the first Thanksgiving, you’re talking about a harvest festival that took place in 1621. Only two eyewitness accounts of the three-day feast exist: a letter was written by Edward Winslow and sent back to England, and a written record from Plymouth’s governor, William Bradford. While Winslow says nothing about turkeys, Bradford says, “And besides waterfowl, there was a great store of wild turkeys, of which they took many, besides venison, etc.”
That seems to indicate that turkeys were present, but it doesn’t sound like they were the main course. In fact, he never explicitly states that they were consumed at the feast. There were numerous other dishes mentioned by the chroniclers of that first Thanksgiving, including venison and “fowl.” That most likely refers to goose and duck, but fish and lobster were also likely a big part of that harvest festival meal. There were no pies (they didn’t exist yet), but there were plenty of root vegetables and pumpkins in non-pie form.
