The filmmakers had their work cut out for them in order to rip a home apart with popcorn. They had to first identify a suitable place for a specially-rigged home with hydraulics to be erected. The setting was in Canyon Country, a community just north of Los Angeles that was still under development in the 1980s. The simple part was building the home; the difficult part was demolishing it with popcorn.

The producers needed over 200 tons of popcorn to sufficiently fill the house and mimic the structure-busting impact. The initial business contracted out to pop the popcorn burnt down owing to abuse of the popping machinery, according to actor Gabe Jarret. Later batches of popcorn were coated with a fire retardant to prevent burning and had to be covered on set to avoid poisoning birds looking for a nibble.
