Charles liked to draw the family pet and eat unusual objects like pins and tacks. Charles sent a drawing of Spike to Ripley’s Believe It or Not in 1937, and it was used in Robert Ripley’s syndicated panel. Surprisingly, he originally intended to name the dog in his strip Sniffy. However, that name was already in use in a comic strip, so Charles changed it when he remembered his mother telling him that if they ever got another family dog, it would be named Snoopy.
