Frank Oz slipped his right hand inside the puppet’s head to operate Yoda’s lips, while his left hand controlled Yoda’s left hand in The Empire Strikes Back. Kathryn Mullen, a second puppeteer, aided Oz on the Dagobah set, manipulating Yoda’s right hand. Wendy Midener, a puppet builder who had previously worked with Oz and Mullen on The Muppet Show, and later The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth, was supposed to control Yoda’s eyes, but when something on the set caused an allergic reaction for Midener, she was demoted to controlling Yoda’s ears, with then-newcomer David Barclay operating the eyes instead. Deep Roy, an actor and stunt performer, donned a life-sized Yoda outfit for wide views of Yoda moving about.
