Home Taping Is Killing Music

“Home Taping Is Killing Music,” was the motto of a British Phonographic Industry (BPI) anti-copyright infringement marketing campaign in the 1980s. The BPI believed that the capacity of private persons to record music from the radio onto cassettes would cause a fall in record sales as cassette recorder usage grew. The logo, which was a Jolly Roger constructed from the outline of a compact cassette, also said “And It’s Illegal.” On October 28, 1981, then-BPI chairman Chris Wright formally started the campaign.

The campaign was revived in the 2000s when the Norwegian section of the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) started a new campaign called Piracy Kills Music. The campaign has the same message, name, and logos. With great criticism, the campaign received the Norwegian Gulltaggen award for “Best Internet Strategy” in 2008.
