According to a Hazlitt report by Nicole Pasulka and Brian Ferree, early sketches of the iconic Disney villain were inspired by Baltimore-based drag queen and actress Divine. Divine died a year before the film’s release, so she never got to see her character come to life.

Most fans would immediately identify the film’s sassy villain as an octopus, but Ursula is actually a cecaelia, a mythical human-octopus hybrid. The character lacks even eight tentacles. She has six tentacles in addition to her two human arms, reportedly because animating the tentacles was too expensive.
