The Powerpuff Girls Cartoon
The Powerpuff Girls is an American superhero animated television series that was developed by animator Craig McCracken and produced by Hanna-Barbera (later Cartoon Network Studios) for Cartoon Network. The series has aired on Cartoon Network since 1999. The main characters of the program are three young girls who are only in kindergarten yet have superpowers. Their names are Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup. The girls and their creator, a scientist by the name of Professor Utonium, make their home in the fictitious city of Townsville. The mayor of Townsville relies on the girls and their abilities to assist in the battle against local criminals and other foes.
In 1992, when Craig McCracken was in his second year at CalArts, he directed a short film called Whoopass Stew! about a group of young female superheroes known as the Whoopass Girls. The film was only shown at film festivals. After the series’ title was changed to Powerpuff Girls, McCracken sent his student film to Cartoon Network. On February 20, 1995, Cartoon Network aired the revised pilot episode of the series as part of its animation showcase program World Premiere Toons. The following year, on January 28, 1996, the series’ sequel, “Crime 101,” also debuted on the network. The whole series that was created by McCracken was given the go-ahead by the administrators of the network, and it made its premiere as a Cartoon Cartoon on November 18, 1998.
The last episode of The Powerpuff Girls aired on Cartoon Network on March 25, 2005. This marked the end of the show’s six-season run on the network, which also included three specials and a feature film. In addition to the two shorts, a Christmas special, the feature, a tenth-anniversary special, and a special episode employing CGI technology, a total of 78 episodes were shown during the course of the show’s run. An anime, three CD soundtracks, a home video collection, comic novels, a series of video games, a 2016 revival series, and a variety of licensed items are among the different forms of spin-off media. During the course of its existence, the series was put forth for consideration for one Kids’ Choice Award, six Emmy Awards, and nine Annie Awards.
