Most people believe that Wednesday Addams was born on television, however, her first appearance was long before the 1960s comedy “The Addams Family.” She first appeared in a comic strip written by, you guessed it, American artist Charles Addams. While his name was Charles, he signed his comics under the pen name “Chas Addams.” It’s a novel strategy to base your characters on your surname while altering your first name. But Charles (or Chas) Addams was a strange character. Perhaps he felt Chas sounded cooler… we’ll never know.

Now, Addams did make art that wasn’t all doom, gloom, and creeptastic, but, like Edgar Allan Poe, that’s all people tend to remember him for. It didn’t help things that he named his creepiest characters after himself. It didn’t help that, according to NPR, his notion of a good time was telling his buddies he went to mad asylums for fun and offering to bring them home — only to take routes that traveled through hundreds of graves. But, hey, entertainment in the 1930s was scarce. Give the man some space.
