Blazing Saddles and William J. Le Petomane
Mel Brooks directed the 1974 satirical dark comedy-western Blazing Saddles. Brooks, Andrew Bergman, Richard Pryor, Norman Steinberg, and Alan Uger wrote the screenplay, which starred Cleavon Little and Gene Wilder, and was based on Bergman’s narrative and draft. The picture got largely favorable critical and public reviews, was nominated for three Academy Awards, and is placed No. 6 on the American Film Institute’s 100 Years…100 Laughs list.
Brooks plays Governor William J. Le Petomane, a Yiddish-speaking Native American leader, and “a director” in line to assist invade Rock Ridge (a homage to Hitchcock); he also dubs lines for Lili von Shtupp’s backup company. Slim Pickens, Alex Karras, and David Huddleston join Brooks regulars Dom DeLuise, Madeline Kahn, and Harvey Korman in the cast. Count Basie, the bandleader, makes a cameo appearance with his orchestra.
This iconic Blazing Saddles T-Shirt depicts the amusing character William J. Le Petomane, who is famous for his farting abilities.
