Woodstock originally emerged when a mother bird established a nest on Snoopy’s tummy. There were two birds in it, but the mother never returned, leaving Snoopy to raise them solo. Snoopy was first opposed to raising them. He became so fed up with the two birds that he flung them out into the world one day. Snoopy’s initial thought was that he was relieved to be free of the obligation. When one of the two birds returned, he felt agitated. Snoopy chose to nurture it and got quite attached to it. Snoopy taught the bird many things, including how to fly, which was ineffective. That sparrow grew up to be Woodstock.
Snoopy was often irritated by Woodstock in his early years (before he was even named). Snoopy regularly referred to Woodstock as a “dumb bird” and despised his weak flying abilities.
