Fun Facts About the 4th of July

For many, the Fourth of July is an occasion to lay out in the sun, drink a few beers, and watch fireworks with family and friends, but the history of Independence Day is deeper and more fascinating than one would think.

Here are interesting facts about the United States’ birthday that may surprise family and friends.

We Didn’t Actually Declare Independence On July 4th

One of the most common misunderstandings about the Fourth of July is the name and date. On July 4, 1776, America proclaimed independence from Britain, according to popular belief. The formal vote, however, took place two days earlier, and the “Declaration” was published in newspapers on July 4.

The 50-Star Flag’s Designer Lived In Lancaster, Ohio

As Alaska and Hawaii approached statehood in 1958, a history teacher gave a class project to redesign the national flag.

Robert G. Heft, aged 16, fashioned a new flag out of the existing 48-star flag plus $2.87 worth of blue fabric and white iron-on material. His design received a B-minus, which he contested by submitting it to President Dwight D. Eisenhower in Washington, D.C.

According to his obituary, Heft was one of the hundreds who submitted flag designs, but he was the only one who actually sewed a flag together and delivered it to Washington, D.C.

Heft’s grade was correctly changed to an A after he chose the flag. In 1960, his design was adopted as the national flag.

During The Fourth Of July, Americans Will Eat 150 Million Hot Dogs

The National Sausage and Hot Dog Council (NHDSC) predicts that Americans will consume 150 million hot dogs on the July 4th holiday. This is a portion of the predicted 7 billion that will be consumed over the summer season, which runs from Memorial Day to Labor Day.

Only Two Men Signed The Declaration Of Independence On July 4, 1776

On July 4, 1776, Charles Thompson and the famed John Hancock were the only two individuals who signed the Declaration of Independence. The remaining 54 delegates signed over the following month.

There’s Something Written On The Back Of The Declaration Of Independence… And No, It’s Not An Invisible Ink Treasure Map

According to the History Channel, a simple statement says, “Original Declaration of Independence dated 4th July 1776,” scribbled upside-down across the bottom of the signed paper.

According to the same article, no one knows who wrote it or when it was written, but it was thought to have been inserted as a label during the Revolutionary War when parchment was routinely wrapped up for transportation.

One Later Retracted The Independence Declaration

After being caught and imprisoned by the British in November 1776, Richard Stockton, a lawyer from New Jersey, became the sole signer of the Declaration of Independence to renounce his support for the revolution. Stockton was liberated after years of severe treatment and recanting his allegiance, only to discover all of his possessions destroyed or plundered by the British. His library, one of the greatest in the colonies, was destroyed by fire.

The Signers’ Average Age Was 45 Years

The youngest signers, Thomas Lynch Jr. and Edward Rutledge of South Carolina, were barely 26 years old. At 70 years old, Benjamin Franklin of Pennsylvania was the oldest signer.

The Declaration of Independence was written on a laptop… well, not a current laptop, but still. Thomas Jefferson composed the Declaration of Independence on a lap-sized writing desk. This gadget was known as a “laptop” at the time.

Conclusion

Whether it is Patriot Day, Independence Day, or normal, patriotism is in every citizen. Wear patriot clothing or decorate your house with patriot mats to show your pride for your nation, especially during the patriot days.
