The history of Westies
West highland terriers are Scottish dogs. Their history stems to James VI in the 16th century. Even the King of France ordered a dozen terriers as a present.
Westies were employed to capture rats on farms before becoming hunting dogs, like other terriers. According to legend, their huge, powerful tails were created to assist them escape animal warrens. Labor requirements are also blamed for the characteristic white fur. Edward Donald Malcolm, 16th Laird of Poltalloch, hunted with reddish brown terriers before the breed’s origin. When a dog was mistaken for a predator and shot, he determined to breed white animals that would be more visible.
The Laird didn’t want Westies to define him. Poltalloch terrier was renamed West Highland terrier. Despite his reservations, they’ve acquired popularity. Westies have been popular in the U.S. for over 50 years. Cruft’s, the UK’s most famous dog show, has acknowledged their brilliance. They’ve been in movies, TV series, and ads.
