Americans should know the 4th of July’s rich history and critical facts. Six examples:
Some colonists celebrated Independence Day in 1776 by arranging mock funerals for King George III of England, symbolizing the end of British dominance in the New World.
Philadelphia celebrated Independence Day in 1777.
John Adams, a founding father and second president, said July 2 should be Independence Day. Since he thought July 2nd was the 4th, he refused to celebrate.
When Jefferson and Adams died in 1826, the Founding Fathers were heartbroken. James Monroe died in 1831.
Thomas Jefferson hosted the inaugural Fourth of July at the White House in 1801. Horse races, parades, food, and drinks were part of the July 4th celebrations.
Fourth of July has never been a federal holiday. Government employees didn’t have paid vacation time until 1941.
