What is the story of Haxan?

The Haxan video covers the historical foundations and beliefs surrounding witchcraft from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century, using both documentary-style narrations and staged narrative scenes. Based in part on Christensen’s own research into the Malleus Maleficarum, a 15th-century German handbook for inquisitors, Häxan hypothesizes that such witch hunts may have resulted from misconceptions of mental or neurological diseases, resulting in widespread panic.

Häxan was re-edited and re-released in the United States by Metro Pictures Corporation in 1968 under the title Witchcraft Through the Ages. William S. Burroughs provides an English-language narrative in this version. The Swedish Film Institute restored the original Swedish-language version of Häxan three times, in 1976, 2007, and 2016. Häxan has been dubbed Christensen’s masterpiece for its blend of documentary-style and narrative storytelling, as well as its visual imagery, since its first release.
